How To Know You Are In The Business

...when you don't like it when there are those who don't like the way you are doing it, and you can't take some friendly criticism.

Jefferson Parish interim president has decided he doesn't like it when people talk bad about him. So rather than resorting to the time honored "I know you are, but what am I?" tactic, he has decided to sue, with public money funding the lawsuit to the tune of $300/ hour.

Upset that some of the opinion posts on NOLA.com have less than glowing things to say and are calling a spade a spade, Steve Theriot, who got his job after Aaron Broussard left under a cloud of corruption, is suing NOLA.com, and the anonymous posters who had the nerve to say bad things about him. Bad enough that a politician even thinks that he can get away with this is the fact that he also named the government of the parish as a plaintiff, probably to secure public funding for the lawsuit.

To its credit, NOLA.com has basically given Theriot the finger. They refuse to divulge names, and refuse to remove the postings. After this stunt, I am sure the number of John Does attached to this case will rise, as the parish will likely go after any new posters for this blatant attack on free speech. To knuckle under to the parish would effectively end the site's use as a forum, anyway, and a journalist is rarely more self-righteous as when they are protecting their sources.

Also listed in this suit is the blog slabbed.

Thank God this moron is only an "interim" president. The only person I will vote for in the upcomming parish president election will be the one that drops the lawsuit, and then sues Theriot to get the parishes money back. I hope that if I call Theriot and the parish council thugs, morons, incompetent, useless, corrupt, and just plain meany stinky heads, I can get in on the counter-suit, cause I can sure use that money.

Info = Entertainment?

Only to the intellectually lazy. Here is a Fox News story of how Barack Obama is warning Virginia college grads that there is too much information out there, and technology is undermining democracy. Funny, since he embraced technology to appeal to these same students during his campaign. Lamenting the "pressure" that instant information exchange is putting on democracy, he warned against the perils of blogs, Twitting, and other social media.

Yeah, I am sure that he would want to warn against that. Apart from talk radio, which is under constant attack to be made "more fair" (keep in mind that "fair" to a liberal is all for them, none for you) social networking and blogging are some of the only mediums that are freely accessible to the right. This speech is a thinly veiled condemnation of American's most cherished right...Free Speech. But this moronic address does something far more subtle...it is an attack on technology itself, one thing that liberals detest, since technology, even if used for entertainment, not enlightenment, frees people. We can travel, get information, challenge our leaders, and live longer all more efficiently than even just 2-3 generations ago.

W...T...F!?

What is really offensive is that this moronic teacher is imparting her worthlessness no her students. Public schools are a tax drain, and worthless.

How Has This Not Caught On?

Up In Smoke

Reason 157 why not to gamble. Man loses winning in fire.

Why I Hate Gold Sellers

Yesterday morning, it was my turn. When I tried to log on to my World of Warcraft account, I was asked for an Authenticator number. Perplexed, I tried to log on again, thinking it was some glitch or hic-cup in the server. No such luck. I immediately attempted to contact Blizzard, who are not exactly the easiest people to get a hold of. 11 million people pony up 12-15 dollars a month, and they can only hire three people to man their phones?

Once the authenticator issue was resolved, I was able to log on, and of course, my guild bank was stripped of gold, my characters were stripped down and the items sold. Strangely, there were two characters untouched...my warrior who is the oldest character I had, and the Horde side hunter. Two of the lowest level characters, one each Horde and Alliance were transferred away.

Overall, I took it in stride. I sent an in-game ticket, which was never answered, because the ALWAYS have a large volume of tickets. Alas, an hour or so later, I was kicked off the server. When I attempted to re-log, I learned my account had been closed for gold-selling. I was assured it would take "about a day" by the other Customer Service operator. The day is up, and surprise!!!! no account access. Not all that shocking, as it is the weekend.

I guess my main beef isn't with the assholes who stole my account, were able to put an authenticator on it, and get me banned for gold-selling, but with Blizzard itself and the way they are (mis)handling the situation. A cursory glance at the forums has revealed a stunning turn of events...I was not the only person who was hit. The forums are getting more and more posts from other players who were also hit. Since my account was closed, I am unable to warn others that they can lose their account...not even the guy who claims to see his old character farming in Borean Tundra.

What amazes me the most, though? In the space of about 25 hours or so, my account was stolen, and I was banned for gold selling, even after I had called Blizzard to warn them what had happened. So, I am out all my in-game gear, a day's play, and if this isn't resolved, another several bucks for the game. Sorry Blizz, you are FAIL! Fail for your inability to detect a problem from reading your forums, fail for having 3, maybe 4 operators for your customer service, fail for not better verifying the owner of the accounts that request authenticators. Didn't the shipment of 10,000 to Shanghai give it away? Right now, I am more pissed at you than the dickheads who did this.

Who's Country Is This, Anyway?

Some things need to be seen in order to be believed, and here is a case in point. Cinco de Mayo, a Mexican holiday, is gaining popularity in this nation, mostly as an excuse to drink watery Corona beers and sugary, cloyingly sweet "margaritas". However, apparently, to Mexicans, it is a way big deal. In Morgan Hill, CA, several students were sent home because they had the nerve to wear American flag themed clothes on May 5th. A short video link to the story is here. The one thing I find most interesting (since it is near impossible to outrage me, such is my cynicism) is the girl in the interview. I would bet a million pesos (about $1.27, if I remember correctly) that she couldn't tell you why Cinco de Mayo is even a big deal, except for the reasons given above. In case you didn't know, here is why it is a big deal.

A couple of things that are interesting about this story are that 1) They only defeated the French, and 2) it has nothing to do with Mexican Independence Day, yet another date that the girl probably couldn't tell you about. So I guess this is what it has come down to, an inability to have pride in ourselves as Americans, for fear of offending someone who is in this country, anyway. I guess there can be no flag themed clothes on Boxing Day (look it up yourself) unless they are British, or Bastille Day unless they are French. I am interested to see if September 16th is a big deal to that girl next school year.

It remains to be seen if the AMERICAN Civil Liberties Union will get involved.
